The beauty of a tailored midi over a dress is the freedom. A dress usually dictates the mood the moment you put it on. A skirt is an invitation. You can style it up or down, shift the temperature, change the attitude.

It’s a base, the way a great pair of trousers is a base. Same room for friction. Same room for composition. But with a sharper, more architectural line.

The skirt wasn’t the problem. The composition was.

Once I stopped pairing skirts with “pretty” pieces and started treating them like trousers, everything clicked.

And honestly, at this point I’m only interested in pieces that earn repeat wear. The kind you can build around in different seasons, in neutrals, so the styling can do the work.

Why This Silhouette Feels Current Again

There’s a return to clean lines right now. Fewer decisions, more restraint. I get it.

But the reason I keep coming back to the pencil midi isn’t nostalgia. It’s function. It gives you a sharp line, it behaves like trousers, and it holds up across seasons.

And then the update. This season I added a version with belt loops, which makes it even more workable. It lets you define the waist, shift proportion, and change the mood without changing the skirt.

The Hem is the Styling

Midi skirts get blamed for everything. Too long, too mature, not flattering.

It’s rarely the skirt. It’s where it lands on the leg, and what you do around it.

Mid-calf is the spot that makes people nervous, because it can hit at the widest part of the calf. That’s when the skirt starts to feel heavy, especially with a flat.

My fix is simple. Either let the hem land in a cleaner place on the leg, or go longer so it reads like a choice.

That’s why I prefer this silhouette in a longer midi. It sits below mid-calf, closer to low-calf, which gives you more shoe range than the in-between hem.

Three things I adjust first:

1. Hem + leg line
   Mid-calf can be tricky if it hits at the widest part of the calf. I want the hem to land cleaner, or go long enough that it reads like a choice.

2. Break the polish
   A pencil skirt can turn “proper” fast. I interrupt that with something casual, a sweatshirt, a denim shirt, a bomber, a skater tee. Contrast is what keeps it modern.

3. Shoe sets the mood
   Boot under the hem creates a clean column. A pointed or textured flat keeps it sharp. A kitten heel stretches the line without turning it into “evening.”

Pencil skirts don’t need a comeback. They need better styling.

My Go-To Formulas

The skirt stays the same. The mood changes through the top layer and the shoe.

1) Off-Duty Top

Sweatshirt, tee, relaxed layers, this is where the skirt stops feeling precious. You can keep it clean, or push it a little rough. Same base, different attitude.

This is my antidote to ‘ladylike.’

2) The Shirt

Denim shirt, short sleeve button-down worn loose, anything with structure that still feels easy. Sharp without feeling dressed up.

3) The Bomber

Leather for bite. Satin for a little shine. Mood shift, fast.

4) Polished, Edited

This is the sharper slot. A sleeker top, a more precise shoe, one detail that carries the look. Not “evening,” just more finished. The skirt stays the anchor, you’re only adjusting the level of formality.

What to Look For When You Buy One

A tailored midi is only as good as the cut. The goal is structure, not squeeze.

• Fabric with backbone. You want it to hold a line, not cling.

• A waistband that sits flat. Comfortable, clean, no constant adjusting.

• Belt loops. Not essential, but a major styling advantage. They let you shift proportion quickly.

• A lining is underrated. It’s the difference between a skirt that glides and a skirt that clings, especially with knits and tights.

• A slit that lets you walk. Mobility matters. If you can’t move, you won’t wear it.

• A clean finish at the hem. This skirt lives and dies by the edge.

• Neutral color first. Black, grey, navy, cream. The neutral is what gives you range.

Why This Counts as a Superior Staple

This is a Hero Piece when it earns repeat wear across categories. Casual day, sharper day, polished version, same skirt, different formula.

That’s the whole framework: Hero Pieces become Formulas, Formulas become a Seasonal Lineup. Less second-guessing, more outfits you repeat on purpose.

Lately, I’ve been thinking less about outfits and more about structure.

Getting dressed has become more complicated than it needs to be. Too many saved looks, too many pieces that look good on their own but do not quite work together.

Most of us do not need more inspiration. We need more clarity.

At some point, I stopped trying to build outfits from scratch every morning. I started working with formulas instead. Not in a rigid way, but as a starting point. A base that already makes sense.

I usually start with the bottom half, then build from there.

Once that part is clear, getting dressed becomes much easier. You are not guessing anymore. You already know what works, and you just adjust the mood.

Why formulas are not boring

A formula is not about dressing the same every day.

It is what allows you to repeat without feeling repetitive.

When the base is strong, you do not need to overthink it. You can focus on what actually changes the look, proportion, texture, accessories.

That is where it becomes personal.

There are infinite ways to combine clothing. A formula is not a rule, it is something to build on.

This season, I’m leaning into a less controlled way of dressing. Less matchy-matchy, more instinct. Not everything needs to line up perfectly. The shoe does not need to match the bag. The tones do not need to be exact. In fact, a little mismatch often makes the outfit feel more modern.

That tension is what makes it work.

What matters most is figuring out what actually works for you, your lifestyle, and the way you get dressed.

A classic blazer polishes.

The lapel line, the structure, the undertone of formality. It gives a look authority without asking you to perform.

It isn’t “better” than a regular blazer. It’s just a different tool. A regular blazer can disappear into your day. A tuxedo blazer adds edge. It sits somewhere between daywear and evening without committing to either.

That tension is the whole point.

Why It Works

A tuxedo blazer provides what I call The Instant Edit.

It takes whatever you’re wearing and makes it feel intentional.

• The lapels: that slight sheen reads festive energy, even on a basic base.

• The cut: sharper lines, cleaner finish.

• The paradox: the ultimate masculine-feminine bridge. Clean frame, unexpected softness.

What to Look For

I don’t buy tuxedo blazers for trend. I keep them for structure and longevity.

My filter is simple:

• The Shoulder: A clean line that holds.

• The Lapel: Sharp, not fussy.

• The Weight: Fabric that keeps its shape, not a flimsy “blazer-lite.”

• The Proportion: A cut that honors the waist but leaves room for a layer. It has to play well with both the slouch of denim and the strictness of a trouser.

The goal is range. If it only makes sense for one type of night, it won’t earn its place.

How I Wear Mine

Below are the formulas I repeat. Same tuxedo blazer, different bases. This is how one piece covers a week.

I’ve worn this tuxedo blazer with black trousers for evenings, with denim for weekends, and with elevated basics when I want the look to feel finished without being dressed up.

Same blazer. Completely different energy each time.

The structure stays consistent. I’m not reinventing the outfit. I’m shifting the mood with what’s underneath and what shoe finishes it.

That’s the formula. One anchor piece. Multiple compositions.

1. THE DENIM FRICTION
Denim keeps it real life, the blazer gives it direction. My easiest upgrade when I want to feel pulled together without feeling dressed up.

2. THE PEEK-THROUGH EFFECT
The blazer does the framing. The underlayer does the shifting, through cuffs, ties, movement, just enough revealed.

3. SHARP EVENING
Evening looks built on clean black tailoring and one focal point. Strict base, single accent, maximum impact.

Formulas give you options. The Seasonal Lineup gives you direction.

Why Ten

Ten isn't a rule. It's a rhythm.

Most of us rotate through a surprisingly small number of outfits anyway, the ones that work, the ones that feel right. Ten gives enough range to cover real life without tipping back into excess.

Less than that can feel restrictive. More starts to blur.

It creates structure without pressure. Space without chaos.
Repetition isn't a failure of imagination. It's how style becomes a signature.

How to Think About Your Ten

Your Seasonal Uniform isn’t built around trends or new pieces. It’s built around moments.

Think about your actual week:

Work
How many work outfits do you truly rotate through, the ones you can repeat without thinking? Usually three or four.

Weekends
How many casual looks do you reach for on autopilot? Two or three that repeat easily.

Evening
How many polished moments do you realistically need? One or two outfits that feel finished.

Transition
How many in-between days, travel, errands, studio days, weather swings? These outfits do a lot of quiet heavy lifting.

Signature
How many looks feel most like you, on your terms? One or two.

Add those up and you’re usually right around ten.

Each one is a composition you can repeat, adjust, and trust. Same structure, different finishing.

Where to Start

Think about what you actually wear right now. Not what you wish you wore. What do you reach for when you’re running late, when you need to feel like yourself, when you don’t want to think?

That’s your starting point.

For me, it’s usually a strong knit with a precise trouser and one good shoe. Sometimes a layer. It shifts with the season. In winter it’s a coat or a knit under the blazer. In summer it’s the same structure, just lighter. It’s usually a formula I trust. I’m not reinventing anything. I’m repeating something I know works.

This week, look at your closet differently. Not as someone shopping for more, but as someone editing what’s already there.
